The annual academic session of the North East India Geographical Society (NEIGS) was held under the agesis of Geography Department, Bajali College, Pathsala on 29th April, 2017 in the college premises. The day-long programme started with hoisting of flags at 9 am. The Bajali College flag was hoisted by Dr. Manoj Kr. Mahanta, Principal, Bajali College and the NEIGS flag by Prof. Abani Kr. Bhagabati, President, NEIGS. The inaugural session of the event was held in the Digital Conference Hall of the college at 10 am. The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. Abani Kr. Bhagabati, President, NEIGS. Eminent personalities and academicians from different parts of North East India and the members of Bajali College fraternity were present in the session. Dr. Jyotishmoy Bora, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Bajali College and Assistant Secretary of the organising committee called upon the distinguished guests to the dias of the inaugural session. The session began with presenting devotional instrumental music by Tonmoyee Deka – a TDC second semester (Major) student of Geography Department. Mr. Sampurnananda Talukdar, President, Governing Body of the college lit the ceremonial lamp and Dr. Manoj Kr. Mahanta, Principal, Bajali College who is also the President of the organising committee delivered his speech welcoming the learned gathering. Prof. Dulal Ch. Goswami, Retired Head, Department of Environmental Science, Gauhati University inaugurated the session and released the 19th issue of ‘Bhougolika’ (a special issue on ‘River’), the lone Assamese Geographical Journal of NEIGS edited by Dr. Bikul Barman and Dr. Jyotishmoy Bora. Prof. Goswami dwelt at length on the NEIGS. Prof. Anup Saikia, Head, Department of Geography, Gauhati University addressed the gathering as guest of honour. Dr. Madhushree Das, Secretary of the NEIGS highlighted the history and development of the society since it’s inception i.e. from 1968. Dr. Bikul Barman, Secretary of the organising committee who is also the Head, Department of Geography, Bajali College offered vote of thanks. Parallel technical sessions on ‘Physical Geography’ as well as on ‘Human Geography’ were held in Digital Conference Hall and in Geography Seminar Hall from 12 noon. A total of 15 research scholars presented research papers on Physical Geography and other 12 papers were on Human Geography. Prof. Ratneswar Barman, Retired Head, Department of Geography and Prof. Ashok Kr. Bora from the Department of Geography, Gauhati University acted as chair persons in the technical session on ‘Physical Geography’ and Prof. Bimal Kr. Kar from the Department of Geography, Gauhati University chaired the session on ‘Human Geography’. Dr. Dipak Baruah and Mr. Sarat Ch. Talukdar, faculty members of the Department of Geography, Bajali College offered vote of thanks to the chair persons and the participant research scholars. In the afternoon, the valedictory session started under the Presidentship of Prof. Anup Saikia, Head, Department of Geography, Gauhati University. The session was addressed by Prof. Ratneswar Barman from Gauhati University, Mr. Rabindra Nath Patowari, formerly Head, Department of Geography, Bajali College and Dr. Chandana Sarma, Vice Principal, Bajali College. The certificates of participation and paper presentation were given away by the eminent guests present in the dias. In fine, vote of thanks was offered by Dr. Jyotishmoy Bora.
