The University Grants Commission (UGC) has initiated several measures to bring equity, efficiency and excellence in the Higher Education System of country. To impart quality in higher education a new system has been devised, called as Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) which is a more logical and students friendly platform corresponding to currently implemented Choice Based Semester System (CBSS). The semester system accelerates the teaching-learning process and enables vertical and horizontal mobility in learning. The credit based semester system provides flexibility in designing curriculum and assigning credits based on the course content and hours of teaching.

The newly upgraded Bajali College to Bhattadev University organized an interactive lecture programme cum workshop on the new CBCS system in the undergraduate courses in Gauhati University in the Digital Conference Hall on June 22nd last. Prof. Nissar Ahmed Barua of the Department of Economics, Gauhati University, a former Dean of Management of the university and the Chairman, Implementation Cell of Choice Based Credit System delivered an extensive lecture on the different aspects of CBCS and its ways of proper implementation in the college in letter and spirit. He said that the choice based credit system is the advanced step in comparison to former choice based semester system (CBSS). CBCS offers the student a diversity of courses to choose from and the autonomy to decide on the place and time of learning. Prof. Barua added the UGC has recommended that it is desirable for all institutions of higher education to move to a CBCS and together with it, implement a uniform grading system. Prof. Barua replied the different queries of the faculties relating to CBCS system. It may be mentioned here that Gauhati University has introduced the CBCS system in the undergraduate level from the current session. Earlier, Prof. D.P. Misra, HoD, English explained the objective of the workshop and introduced the resource person to the house.
